Vital Wheat Gluten (seitan)
#meatalternative #meatsubstitute
Seitan dates back to ancient China, almost 1,500 years ago. Buddhist monks in the sixth century discovered the wheat meat after soaking their wheat dough in water, removing all the starch, leaving a high protein wheat gluten.
The term 'seitan' is thought to have come from the combination of several words: 'sei' meaning 'made of' and 'tan', which means 'protein'.
Vital wheat gluten comes as a powder (flour) and therefore it's very versatile. You can make it taste like anything you want. It can be roasted, fried, grilled or put on a braai.
The dish on the photo was made by my husband (big seitan fan) with boiled home-grown potatoes and little salad on the side. Yum!
The price is R85/1kg. You only need around 250g to make around 8 steaks. Other ingredients that might be needed: marinade, chickpeas, veggie stock and spices.
